Historical events at the World Cup: 1994 Salenko 


The 2018 World Cup took place in Russia as many people know. Although Russia is the ninth most populated country in the world with a rich football tradition but they have never really impressed on an international platform specialy on big tournements, atleast not since they first competed as Russia but not as the Soviet Union in 1994.

Russia had a good team at the end of the last decade, wich made it to the semi finals of the European Championship in 2008. But there performance in the World cup has been far from good.

The Russians still have one very good memory and a player who is known amongst legends. His name is Oleg Salenko who shared the golden shoe with Hristo Stoichkov at the 1994 world cup in the USA. Salenko scored six goals on the tournament and five of them in one match against Cameroon.

Salenko's record of scoring 5 goals in one and the same game at the world cup still stands today and it is unlikely that someone will beat it in the near future. There have been five world cup competidions since Salenko sat the record and totally humiliated Cameroon in California 1994.

Salenko was born in Leninngrad in the Soviet Union in 1969, being 25 years old when he joined Russia in the 1994 World Cup. He played the longest for Dynamo Kiev, but was the player of Logrones's little known team when he went to the United States with the Russians.

Salenko hardly played a national game without doing anything or the game itself was historic. He has one national game behind Ukraine, which was played in 1992. It was the first official game of the Ukrainian national team after independence.

    It is an original idea to talk about russian players. Indeed, there are few great russian players almost unknown and who deserves to be famous like Sergueï Ignachevitch. The other think that this article suggest is in 1994 Russia competed for the first time in World Cup (because it was a new country) and now this country organized the World Cup. It seems that Russia is being better in football. Maybe, it is also because Russia is being richer and it is now one of the most powerful country in the word.

    This is my first time to get to know something about the Russian player, and it is quite interesting to read his brief history and watched the video. : ) Russian team were used to be a nice team but now they aren't playing as well as years before, but maybe they will conquer their problem of having not enough Russian player one day?
