HISTORY OF SHORT TRACK SKATING IN KOREA
Short track speed skating is a form of
competitive ice speed skating. World Championships in short track
speed skating have been officially held since 1981, although events held in
1976–1980 under different names have since received the status of World
Championships retrospectively. The name of the competition was changed several
times before it was eventually titled the "World Short Track Speed
Skating Championships" in 1989; the championships are now held
annually. Short track speed skating was introduced as a demonstration sport at
the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta in
Canada.
Here are DETAILS, South Korea national short
track teams (both sexes) have 24 gold, 14 silver, 11 bronze medals in Olympic and
20 gold, 19 silver, 14 bronze medals in world team championship. Also, 28 gold,
18 silver, 9 bronze medals in world championship. There were 21th world cup
since 1997 and Korea team won the championships 12 times from man and 10 times
from woman. Most of records are from Korean short track teams and that’s why Korea
became powerful nation for short track and is well-known and famous along people.
Otherwise there are several fatal weak points
in South Korean team. First of all, they do not have excessive results in short
distance. The reason that Korean players couldn’t get good results on short
distance is because it requires quick power in short time, otherwise, Korean style
training which emphasizes physical strength only cannot foster short distance
athletes.
In addition, Hellish training, which emphasizes
unconditional training without consideration of age and physical condition,
wears the athlete’s body like a consumable item, causing a major injury, which
immediately leads to the loss of life of the athlete. Besides, there are so
many young players climbing up to the major league that the wounded players
could feel anxiety.
The last one is a faction fight inside the Ice
Federation between players who are graduated ‘Korea Sports University’ and
players who didn’t. In the mid-2000s, the faction was deepened, and the players
from same country even set up an operation to interfere with each other. Since
2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, these factional problems have been identified
and there is no longer a college-to-university clique. Now, however, the
parallels between the characters and the deep- seated corruption and incompetence
of KSU (Korea Skating Union) have not yet been resolved. That’s why you might
heard of ‘Viktor Ahn’ who born in Korean and became a Russian citizen and raced
for the Russian team now because of incompetence of KSU even if he was good player
in South Korea.
As a result, Korea short track will strive
to grow steadily despite those reasons and standardized worldwide technology, also
will remain its position as the World’s No.1

The short track Ice skating during the Olympic were very fun to watch. I am from the Netherland and ice skating is a very normal sport, but before watching the Olympics. With a lot of medailles they dominated the short tracks and it was fun to watch there strategy. Most of the time watching for the good time to go at the front.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that the Korean people were so good at Short track. For me it is difficult to understand how the korean culture begin with the short track and how this sport became so big in the country?

DeleteHi Floor. Short track athletes are smaller in size than speed skaters and have shorter track lengths than speed skating. It is suitable for Korean body shape, also in other Asia country for instance China. In the 1986 winter Asian games, short track was adopted as a formal event, and Korea was ranked second behind Japan at that time.
In my opinion, frankly talking, the reason for becoming a short-track country now is due to the strategy of sacrificing other team members to push a good player to the individual winner. Also, Hell training is the reason.
In Korean culture, a sport that once won a medal tends to be acquired more medals in the next competition. That's why government invests as much as they can if they see the possibility getting the medals.
In short, suitable body shape and passion to get the prize.!
Hi Steven,
DeleteThankyou for you answer and know I understand better why the gouverment invest money in the Short Track sport. The size of the athletes is a really strong point and it is a smart move from your country!

MARC CRUZ: The history of speed skating in the winter Olympics, born many years ago, is undoubtedly an impressive sport to see, and that creates much competitiveness. The competitions in track reach high speeds and nowadays there is the test of pursuit by teams that was born in the jjoo 2006.
ReplyDeleteI had first watched short track this Winter Olympic! I was fascinated by how this sports compete!
ReplyDeleteI remember that Korean had nice consequence that time as well. It was really excited to watch them compete. For me, especially the relay race of four.
But it is also dangerous to play this game cause I have seen several time that the athlete fell down and almost hit by the athlete after them.
